Tom Gerrard’s latest series of paintings on paper brings his iconic heads to life in a fresh yet familiar way. Painted loosely using spray paint and airbrush on heavyweight watercolour paper, these works capture the raw energy of his street art while honouring the everyday men who have long influenced his practice. These paintings are bold, expressive, and deeply personal. Each face tells a story—one of migration, community, and the beauty of the ordinary.
The figures in Gerrard’s work stem from a lineage of graffiti characters, reimagined through the multicultural lens of his upbringing in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Inspired by the men he grew up around—his Maltese grandfather, his bocce club mates, and the working-class characters of the ’80s—these portraits embody experience, resilience, and an unapologetic sense of self.
